Matt Gonzalez isn’t running for Mayor
Today, Matt Gonzalez told the editorial board of the Chron that he wouldn’t be running for Mayor. After extensive polling and focus groups, Matt concluded that the voters of San Francisco do not hold Mayor Newsom accountable for City problems like homelessness and MUNI meltdowns…
The Chron suggested that Gonzalez was the last hope for progressives. I think that is a fair assessment. Mirkarimi, Peskin, and Daly have all ruled it out.
This may be a quiet fall.

Robert, you should note that the photographer for that photo of Matt Gonzalez is Liz Ross.

The photo was from his first campaign I believe and my memory was that it as a guy named Mark but I couldn’t remember his last name.

At various times in his campaign and other times, we used the photo. So I know that Liz Ross did the photo. In fact, she talked about the photo to me and how they had staged the shot.

I will take your word for it.

It’s also worth noting that we all looked a helluva lot better back then.

I do believe that armed with $1.5m in public financing, a candidate could have beaten Newsom this year.
Newsom has been unable to raise the kind of money he did in 2003, probably due to his scandals, which is why Jim Sutton is representing BOMA in suing the City to overturn contribution limits for independent expentitures and electioneering communication.
But the messaging for a successful campaign would have been simple and effective, and once inserted into people’s brains through a field campaign, could have carried the day.

the only person that could beat newsom this year, in my opinion, would be far right of him and would criminalize the homeless and prioritize public works over welfare.
which would you rather have?

There’s still h brown and Chicken John. Do they qualify for the financing?
