SF Tenants Testifyed against CitiApartments at Board of Supervisors’ Land Use Committee

SF Life and LGBT and HousingPosted by Robert at 07 May 2008 12:28 pm

This Monday come support CitiApartments tenants and CitiSTOP campaign volunteers as we show the Board of Supervisors how CitiApartments mistreats their tenants and raises all our rents!

WHAT: Hearing in front of the Land Use & Economic Development Committee
WHEN: Monday May 12th at 1pm
WHERE: City Hall, Room 263 (on Polk St between McAllister and Grove)

In 2005, the City Attorney’s office filed a lawsuit against CitiApartments for unfair business practices, but today, in 2008, CitiApartments continues to buy dozens of buildings across the city, using aggressive and illegal tactics to evict long-term tenants and raise their profit margins. This is our chance to remind our lawmakers that CitiApartments is still a problem and to ask for their help in making Citi behave like a good landlord.

Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese met with a handful of transgender activists in Atlanta last week and apologized for “misspeaking” at last year’s Southern Comfort conference, where he promised HRC would only support an Employment Non-Discrimination Act that included gender identity, according to people attending the meeting.

Today, The Advocate published an article about the transgender man who is having a baby. The original article can be found here. Beatie is to appear on Oprah on Thursday.

An FTM activist responds to the media coverage of Thomas Beatie after his article appeared in The Advocate.

By Robert Haaland

Transgender man Thomas Beatie set off a firestorm in the LGBT population and the world when he announced that he is having a baby and continues to identify as a man. His article in The Advocate, “Labor of Love,” left many, even some transgender people, wondering how someone can identify as male and yet be pregnant. Some have even gone so far to suggest that by bearing the child he is less, or even not, male, despite Beatie’s declaration that he continues to identify as male.

Two letters appeared in the gay press advocating for HRC to get the pink brick. If you haven’t voted already, please do so. Ballots are due by Monday. Read below for more information on HRC and tell your friends! Go to this link to get a printable ballot to mail in.

HRC deserving of Pink Brick

Admittedly, the Human Rights Campaign doesn’t belong in the company of media moron Bill O’Reilly, or any murderous dictator, extremist characters who frankly don’t care what we think. HRC should, however, care what we think. And we think HRC deserves the Pink Brink.

Join Pride at Work on the picket line in support of nurses who are on strike for the next ten days. They are fighting to save our community hospital!
Tuesday, March 25th
7-9am
at St. Luke’s Hospital Valencia and Cesar Chavez

Thousands of RNs have struck Sutter facilities twice already, though this is the first 10-day strike. The key reason for the walkouts is the pattern of patient safety risks caused by Sutter’s refusal to schedule RNs to care for patients when nurses are on legally-mandated meal or rest breaks. Such scheduling gaps leave patients unattended and at risk for sentinel events. Nurses are also concerned over Sutter’s practice of medical redlining by closing hospitals in medically underserved areas like St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco, and their refusal to agree to fair settlements on issues of healthcare and retiree healthcare and pensions.

At last week’s meeting, about 20 folks showed up to testify during public comment on my behalf. It was like being at your own funeral and hearing what folks have to say about you…It is about 5 or 6 minutes into the video.
