Howard Dean rallies for health care
From the Democracy for America mailing list:
That’s today at 5.Hi All,
1. As you’ll probably recall from our meetups, the hardworking brothers and sisters of SEIU-UHW have been on strike now for more than eight weeks — Sutter Health Corporation won’t even accept a deal brokered by a neutral federal mediator.
Well, we’re happy to let you know that Governor Howard Dean will be in town to support the striking workers - and we’d love to have you join us at the rally on Friday.
Gov. Dean will speak at the Pacific Campus of CPMC at Webster and Clay at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28. See you there!
There are new poll numbers out for the special election (props 73-77, anyway), and it’s mostly good news all around.
73 is 42 for 48 against
74 is 46 for 48 against
75 is 46 yes 46 no
76 is 30 yes 62 no
77 is 36 yes 50 no
The news is not all good, however, as Arnie raised $16 million last month. And, you might not know it, but the pharmaceutical industry is spending $80 million on 78 and 79. If they’re that scared of 79, it makes me much more likely to vote for it.
What can you do to counter the Governor’s $16 million and big pharma’s $80 million? Help out with the Alliance for a Better California.
Ackerman Missing Again (edit this)
“Remember that no one wants to strike…
It is up to you to make sure that the history we make in this school
district is a history that we can all be proud of.”
Linda Plack, the talented VP of UESF
Deputy Superintendent Chan stood in for the absent Superintendent Arlene Ackerman on the regulary scheduled meeting of the Board of Education that has held on Thursday, Oct. 27.
Deputy Superintendent Chan also removed an item for $375,000 of unrestricted general funds for information technology consulting as well as the item asking to deny the charter for Thomas J. Edison Academy effective immediately. No reason was given by Dr. Chan.
I got an email from a friend saying that there was a posting on Daily Kos quoting an article from the Sacramento Bee about new polling information showing a much different picture on the State ballot propositions. It was great news for us over in the office of the Alliance for a Better California. We practically did a jig.
Cindy Sheehan has called out Hillary Clinton for cynically supporting the Iraq war.
In her interview, Ms. Sheehan suggested that Mrs. Clinton, who is considered a leading presidential contender in 2008, had made a political calculation in supporting the war. She’s urging anti-war folks not to support Clinton because of her pro-war position. I’m all for this, but I am curious: what national Democrat actually opposed the fiasco in Iraq? What Democrat should anti-war people support?“With her position as a senator,” Ms. Sheehan said, “she’s become more: `Let’s see which way the wind blows, and what’s going to get me re-elected or elected, or how am I going to benefit from this’ instead of truly voting from her integrity.”
Big art coming to San Francisco
The Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF), the non-profit arts foundation spun off from Burning Man, is beginning a program of exhibiting art that originally appeared at Burning Man in San Francisco. The first peice to be exhibited is Flock, by Oakland artist Michael Christian, pictured here. It will be exhibited for a couple months in Civic Center, starting next month. The piece really is spectacular, especially because it is huge.
10/27 BOE Meeting at 7 p.m. & News Blackout about SFUSD’s Union Action (edit this)
The Left in SF scooped the Examiner, the Chronicle, the Sentinel, Beyond Chron and all of the major news channels with its “on the ground” story of Local 790/UESF.
No other news media reported it. Even the reporters who were there didn’t report it. Oh, the reporters who stood in the Board chambers till 9 p.m. waiting to see if the police would haul the school workers away, did report on the press that Dr. Ackerman held at the same time to announce that she was asking the School Board to hire scabs/replacements for the Local 790 workers if they go on strike. But the news media didn’t report the fact that 150 people crowded the Board chambers and thus, the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting didn’t occur.
Superintendant Arlene Ackerman is threatening to hire scabsreplacement workers to work at the schools if the District forces school workers out on strike.
Apparently inspired by the success of Sutter Health’s campaign to replace qualified, dedicated workers with, well, petty thieves, thugs and hacks.
Union leaders, who represent 1,200 workers in the district, said that such a rapid-fire mass hiring would place students at risk because there would be no time to perform legally required background checks on new, picket-line-crossing employees.“She’s willing to trade away the safety of our children for political leverage at the bargaining table,” declared LaWanna Preston, the union’s chief negotiator.
Businesses not fleeing California
It’s probably not that much of a surprise, but a new study points out that the constant claims that this policy or that policy will drive businesses out of California is, well, crap:
A study set for release today debunks the politically charged notion that employers are fleeing California for other states. The analysis by San Francisco’s Public Policy Institute of California argues that what really drives job growth or loss is the birth and death of startups, and the expansion and contraction of existing firms.
