2007 is almost over. And we want to wish you and yours a happy and successful 2008.
Political-wise, it should be an interesting year with a presidential election, open seats in D-1, D-3, D-9 and D-11, two open seats for SF School Board along with Jill Wynn’s and Norman Yee’s, and four spots (with one vacancy with Julio Ramos running for D-11), and a seat for the BART position.

How well does San Francisco’s city government monitor the former government services that it allows to be privatized? Does its monitoring practices imitate that of Utah, Alabama, Louisiana, or Maine…that is, none at all?
That alarmed question, among others, came up while reading the recent Progressive States Network (PSN) report on privatization. Privatizing In The Dark: The Pitfalls of Privatization & Why Budget Disclosure Is Needed, with a 50-State Comparison Of Privatization Trends made me feel as if privatization was to government health what deliberate bleeding of “bad blood” was to curing bodily illness.

Sing the above line to the song “We wish you a Merry Christmas” three times next time you are Christmas Caroling. Last year, a group of community advocates and labor activists sang that song to the GGRA when the GGRA filed a lawsuit against the City of San Francisco to stop the implementation of our local groundbreaking universal health care ordinance. Accompanying the Caroling advocates was the Grinch who handed GGRA members lumps of coal at their annual Holiday party. This year the GGRA handed us a lump of coal.
Chronicle: Tiger at SF Zoo Kills One, Injures Two
The SF Chronicle reports that Tatiana, a Siberian tiger, killed one visitor and injured two yesterday (Christmas Day).
All three victims were reported to be young men in their 20’s. Our prayers and thoughts go out to their families.
Tatiana was the tiger that severely injured a zookeeper in December 2006. The report is that she had escaped her grotto, killed the one man near her grotto and injured the other two in a zoo cafe.
Police officers killed Tatiana while she was on top of one of the injured victims.
2007: Murder at Lowest Number in LA Since 1963 and Murder at its Highest Number in SF
The Associated Press has just released that Los Angeles has its lowest murder rate in 37 years (since 1970).
New York’s murder numbers have also fallen and even Chicago’s numbers are slightly down. NPR commenters stated that one of the reasons is that LAPD, NYPD and the Chicago Police Department have been using data of past crimes in creating strategies to reduce their cities’ murder rate.

In a very similar post several months back, I emailed information about NEA’s Leadershi9p Grant program. Good news-John Muir Elementary School got one! In August, I posted a notice for PG&E’s Bright Schools grant. Marina Middle School and Gateway High School got a 2007 Bright Schools grant.

1. Carlos Garcia Accepts Job of Superintendent
A former superintendent of Fresno and Las Vegas, Carlos Garcia accepted the job of superintendent at SFUSD. While he only began in August, Garcia hasn’t announced any programs nor has show leadership in key issues of budget, school assignment and bridging the achievement gap. Garcia was at the Mayor’s news conference that would allow 6th graders to get admission into SF State (but without any help in paying for tutition). Garcia also reportedly did the backdoor dealing in getting the votes to approve the charter for Bayview Essential Charter School (after he hired the former executive director of the Coalition for Essential Schools for his deputy superintendent). But Garcia has been long on promises and short on action.
