The initiative numbers for November’s election have been announced. The numbers have been reset, so we start again with Prop 1. I think that the legislature can still add more, but here’s the list of what we have so far:
High Speed Rail
Treatment of Farm Animals
Children’s Hospital Bond Act
Parental Notification
Sentencing Reform
Sentencing Increase
Renewable Energy Laws
Anti-Gay Marriage
Victims’ Rights
Alternative Energy Bonds
Redistricting
This is, if I am not mistaken, the third time in the last 3 years we’ve had to put up with a “parental notification” initiative. There’s something pretty broken about an initiative process where any misogynistic asshole with a couple million dollars can get one of these almost-identical propositions on the ballot again and again and again.
Via green consumer porn site Inhabitat, I see that a local designer has put together a proposal for a suspended overhead tram that would take the place of the proposed Central Subway. The idea is that if you build a suspension bridge that only has to support a couple train cars, rather than hundreds of cars, you can build it more cheaply and elegantly than, say, the Bay Bridge.

Last night’s Milk Club 30th anniversary dinner was pretty great, although long.
Fog City Journal’s got a photoessay up with some great pictures.
Highlights included Harry Britt and Gwenn Craig on what it was like to experience the prime of Harvey Milk, the surprisingly compelling video/slide show (with stunning live accompaniment by Holly Near), the screenwriter of Milk, Lance Black, and Sean Penn (Warning: Bad Words).

During the last couple of days, I frequently peeked in on the LGBT news blogs and the CBS and SFGate Websites. A happy smile frequently crossed my face as I gazed at footage and pictures of radiant couples up and down California having their relationships receive an important legal and social stamp of approval.
